Shaken Baby Syndrome Prevention
Shaken Baby Syndrome is a very serious form of child abuse but it can be prevented. Shaking a baby in anger or frustration can lead to permanent disability and even death. We provide Shaken Baby Syndrome simulator doll demonstrations to raise awareness of the dangers.
The simulator, designed with a transparent head that clearly shows the traumatic brain injuries caused by this underreported and often misdiagnosed form of child abuse. When the simulator is shaken, affected sections of the brain light up to illustrate where brain damage has occurred.
The Shaken Baby Syndorme simulator is used in conjunction with a curriculum that addresses the many serious disabilities a child may suffer as a result of shaking, including blindness, seizures, learning disabilities, behavior disorders, paralysis and even death.

Strategies for calming a crying baby and coping with the inconsolable baby are also presented with the demonstration. This information is in line with the current information being given to parents at Memorial Health System/Memorial Hospital for Children. The "Crying Baby Plan" is an important part of their shaken baby syndrome prevention program and includes KPC Respite Center is list as resource for parents.
Community groups, schools, clubs and other organizations are invited to call Family Connections, (719) 520-1019, to schedule a presentation.
